Real-Talk: Tips for Summer Job Searches

By Melodie Fernando; CoChair of Military Alliance BRG and Brooke Kessinger; Chair of Interfaith Alliance BRG

With every new season, new opportunities and new beginnings become possible. Whether your summer is full of post-grad ventures or exciting and new career explorations, there are many things to consider regarding the job search and exploration field.

While there can seem to be hundreds of generalized resume templates or job search tips out there, we’re here to give you the real-talk advice on the most important factors in having a successful summer job search as professionals in the field.

No fluff, no fancy corporate jargon, just the raw facts to help you stand out and stay resilient in your search.

Mindset

Our number one recommendation? Keep an open mind.

While it may sound cheesy or pointless, it makes a difference. Recruiters want to see that you are enthusiastic, and it will make a difference in your personal experience.

Take risks, and don’t be afraid of a new job title or to learn a few new skills. Not only does this open the door for more opportunities, but it encourages your own personal growth and can lead to communities that are not only supportive but will uplift you to your future endeavors.

Goals

Adding to that, it is imperative to do self-reflection in this process. Do you know what your dream job or role is?

A lot of recruiters or interviewers lean toward this question nowadays, and there is significance behind the question; you should have goals, and recruiters want to know them.

While you may not be interviewing or considering a dream job, we want to know what you are building and working towards, because it not only shows character but also that you are willing to expand your skills and interests.

Adaptability is key in the current job market.

Resume-refresh

These softer, more-personable skills are extremely significant to your job searching endeavors.

But, you may be asking, How do I get to an interview?

I apply to hundreds of jobs, and no one seems to be reaching out. The short answer? Fix your resume. No, we don’t mean changing your header, font, color, or anything like that; make sure it is up to date, and your information is relevant to what you have experience and skills doing.

Nothing is as important as showcasing your abilities and position descriptions are accurate, and all of the important information is on the first page.

Lastly, though it’s been said probably hundreds of times, don’t be afraid of AI. While it can seem scary, use it to your advantage, and don’t be surprised when it comes up in your job search or career exploration.

To put it into perspective, branching out, taking risks, and exploration are something we are not strangers to.

With experience in all kinds of people-focused job fairs, ranging from Veterans to those transitioning out of addiction or justice-involved, we witness firsthand the effects of a good mindset, commitment to openness, and overall, the growth that comes from the tips previously mentioned.

So, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Have a good mindset, an updated resume, and a goal of where you want to be in your career. Through our experience in different communities and through all kinds of job fairs and recruiting events, these are important pieces of advice for anyone in their summer job search, for anyone and everyone looking for professional opportunities, growth or exploration.
